FISHING IN PERTHSHIRE
For salmon fishing in Perthshire, you just can’t beat the River Tay,
widely considered the very best salmon river in Europe. The world
record of 66 pounds was landed here in 1922, and a 30 lb catch is not
unusual - some trophy!
So where should you stay in this idyllic part of Scotland? Well, you
might make your choice from the excellent self-catering cottages in the
area, such as at Fortingall on the upper river, or holiday
accommodation near Kenmore. On the lower Tay, you might prefer some of
the excellent hotels in the area but for flexibility there are some
superb 5 star holiday cottages to let near all the beats on the Tay.
So having decided where to stay, what should you bring with you? The
River Tay falls under a Protection Order, so make sure you have your
fishing permit, which will also allow you to fish for the wonderful
indigenous Brown Trout. The permit will let you gain access to the vast
majority of the river’s fishing beats.
A wading pole, a lifejacket, a good pair of boots, and of course your
rods and personal fly collection will also be necessary, although you
might wish to hire or buy the lifejacket when you reach Perthshire,
rather than packing one in your luggage.
There are numerous angling clubs spread along the River Tay, and any
assistance or advice you need may be readily gained from one of these.
The locals are friendly and hospitable, and always willing to share
their knowledge of the surrounding district with you, whether your
interests encompass castles or whisky production, or just a long tramp
through the wonderfully rugged mountain scenery on all sides of you.
Of course, salmon are not the only catches to be had – roach, perch,
chat, pike and great course grayling fishing might also catch your
fancy. Everything is here in Perthshire for the keen angler. Remember,
you are not limited to the River Tay:
The River Ericht offers wonderful Trout and Salmon catches. For Salmon,
Trout, Grayling and sometimes a sea Trout, try the Tummel. The Gaur
River offers Ferrox Trout, Grayling, Wild Brown, Pike and Perch. And
the Spey will yield Salmon, Trout, Sea Trout and Pike.
So book your accommodation, pack your fishing gear, and if you have
never fished the clear sparkling waters of beautiful Perthshire before
then you are in for a real treat – a fishing holiday in Perthshire is
an experience of a lifetime!
